Hawaii Travel: Lanai Vacation Tours
23. June 2008

Lanai offers ample opportunity for adventurous travelers who wish to leave the confines of the resort and explore all the island has to offer. Several tour companies offer visitors guided tours of the island that feature several of the famous features of Lanai. On these tours, you can explore the beaches of the island and the inland hills all during the afternoon.
A good starting point for any island tour would be Lanai City. Situated almost perfectly in the middle of the island, it provides easy access to the rest of the island via a network of paved and dirt roads. From here, you can also drive a rental car or Jeeps to explore the island on your own.
The Roads of Lanai
Though much of Lanai can be explored via a compact sedan, many areas of the island can only be accessed using a four-wheel drive vehicle. Furthermore, though some dirt roads may seem drivable in your compact car, the rental company may have restrictions about using their cars on paved roads only. Thus, if off-road adventure is in the cards, make sure you plan ahead and reserve a four-wheel drive vehicle when you book your vacation package.
The now extinct volcano, Palawai, formed Lanai and much of its landscape, which still bears the scars of its violent genesis. The Garden of the Gods provides a striking example of this beginning in its twisted and grotesque landscape of barren earth and rock. Though the garden name may seem misleading, many find beauty in the strange rock formations of the area.

Hawaii Travel: Best Lanai Vacations
22. June 2008

The island of Lanai is a relatively new addition to the tourism industry, yet has quickly taken hold as a prime luxury destination. Formerly known as the Pineapple Island because of its acres of pineapple plantations, the island is now more aptly referred to as the Secluded Island. For years the island was relatively unknown to those visiting the Hawaiian Islands, as its main economy was agriculture.
Most Hawaiians considered Lanai a waste of time for tourists as it had little to offer in terms of amenities and paled in comparison to the more equipped islands of Maui and Oahu. However, this lack of attention seems to have benefited the island today as it remains sparsely inhabited and enjoys miles of empty land. Today, you can take long walks along empty beachfront and tour the highlands in a rented jeep without seeing a soul.
Lanai Vacations for Luxury Travelers
For luxury travelers, the two resort hotels on the island (the Lodge and the Manele Bay Hotel) offer world-class amenities and service. These hotels were constructed only a mere decade ago and feature amenities and services that youd expect from a world-class resort. Vacation packages for these hotels feature exquisite rooms, as well as a plethora of available activities.
Golfers also flock to the island to enjoy two newly designed courses. The Challenge at Manele Bay sits on the cliffs overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean while the Experience at Koloe offers a mountainous course in the central highlands. Both were designed by famous golfers and feature challenging yet beautiful holes.

Hawaii Travel: Lanai Island Vacations

Vacationing in Lanai offers a refreshing mix of pampered luxury and wilderness adventure. No matter what your interests are, youll find a perfect activity to suit you needs on the island. From world-class golfing to remote mountain hikes, the island of Lanai has something for everyone.
As recently as the 1980s, Lanai was little more than a retired farming village with acres of former pineapple plantations slowly being reclaimed by the elements. The boom days of pineapple production behind, the island began to look for other means of continuing its economy. In the end, the same company that ran the pineapple business for nearly 60 years turned into the Lanai Company and began building luxury resorts.
Vacationing in Style
From 1923 until the early 1990s, the only hotel on the island was the quaint Hotel Lanai. While a nice hotel by any standards, Hotel Lanai was hardly a resort hotel. The rooms were simple yet comfortable and the amenities were limited. Set in the hills overlooking Lanai City, the location was not very conducive to beachfront vacationing.
About 10 years ago, construction was completed on the two new luxury hotels that would soon transform the island in to a haven for vacationers. The Manele Bay Hotel and the Lodge at Koele cater to guests who desire more than just a bed and a shower. The hotels feature everything from leather furniture to breathtaking ocean and countryside views from the balconies. Staying in these luxurious hotels might not be as expensive as you think when you book a package deal. Often, vendors who offer packages do so because they receive discounted rates.

Hawaii Travel: Romantic Lanai Vacations

Whether youre a newlywed couple on your honeymoon or a couple celebrating your 30th year together, the island of Lanai offers a beautiful romantic escape. The island is rich in history and culture and features everything that the happy couple could desire. From luxury resort hotels to secluded beaches, the island may be the perfect romantic getaway.
Because of the relatively recent transformation of the island from being agriculturally-based to being tourism-based, it remains sparsely populated and limited in its urbanity. Indeed, the largest city is Lanai City and even this is little more than a grouping of tin-roofed homes and a few small shops. What the island lacks in sophisticated nightlife, however, it more than makes up for in scenic beauty.
Romance on the Island
This lack of nightlife may be a problem for those looking to find the party, but it is perfect for those who just want to get away from it all. The miles of secluded coastline offers ample opportunity for romantic walks along the beach and private picnics. From the Manele Bay Hotel, you are only a brief walk from Huluope Beach–renowned for its gently breaking waves and soft, golden sand.
For even more privacy, you can rent a jeep and travel to the opposite side of the island to explore Shipwreck Beach or the Garden of the Gods. Both offer striking tropical landscapes and both are seldom very crowded with people. In fact, a walk along Shipwreck Beach will often be just you, your sweetheart, and the pounding surf.

Hawaii Travel: Lanai Singles Vacations

Though Lanai is not known for its nightlife and singles atmosphere, it could be perfect for singles who dont want to meet anyone in a smoky bar. For those who would like to find Mr. or Ms. Right on a mountain trail or along a rocky beach, Lanai might just be the perfect singles bar. With miles of untouched coastline, dry forests, and clouded highlands, the island of Lanai is paradise for naturalists and adventurers alike.
For golfers, the island features two world-class golf courses that rival the best in the world for their difficulty and superb design. The Challenge at Manele was designed by Jack Nicklaus and construction was completed in 1993. Since that time, the course has won numerous awards and been featured in several well-known publications.
Singles in Lanai
You might meet a new golf buddy on the links and invite that special someone for a walk along the beach after the round! If golf isnt your cup of tea, there are several other activities that lend themselves to quiet reflection or active adventure. You may want to rent some snorkel gear and see if you can spot any dolphins off Manele Bay.
There are also numerous opportunities to escape the resort areas and explore the more remote areas of the island. If you think you might want to do some exploring in a vehicle, be sure to rent a four-wheel drive SUV or truck–many sedans and cars wont make the trek. Planning ahead can save you a bit of money, too, if you purchase a package deal with a rental vehicle included.
